Burj Khalifa & Dubai Mall. The tour pauses at the foot of the world’s tallest building — 828 metres of tapering steel and glass — beside the vast Dubai Mall and the choreographed Dubai Fountain. The adjacent Al Fahidi Fort, built around 1787, houses the Dubai Museum and its exhibits on pearl diving, Bedouin life and the city’s astonishing transformation.

Dubai Creek & the abra. The saltwater creek splits Dubai into Deira and Bur Dubai and was the trading artery that made the city rich. You cross it the way traders have for a century — on an abra, a small wooden water taxi — for one of the most atmospheric moments of the tour.

Gold Souk & Spice Souk. In Deira, the Gold Souk’s windows glitter with hundreds of kilos of jewellery, while the neighbouring Spice Souk is a maze of open sacks of saffron, frankincense, dried lemons and rose petals. Browsing is free; bargaining is expected and half the fun.

Beyond the big five

Museum of the Future. The torus-shaped building wrapped in flowing Arabic calligraphy has quickly become one of the most photographed structures on earth. Even from the outside it is a highlight of the modern-Dubai leg; add a ticket to go inside.

Dubai Marina & JBR. A dense forest of residential skyscrapers around a man-made canal, the Marina is where modern Dubai feels most alive. The full-day tour drives the waterfront and the JBR promenade, with its beach, cafes and views of Ain Dubai.

Dubai Water Canal & Bastakiya. The 3.2-kilometre Water Canal cuts through the city under illuminated bridges and past a man-made waterfall. Bur Dubai. Across the Creek, Bur Dubai holds Al Fahidi, the Dubai Museum, the Textile Souk and the Grand Mosque. It is the most walkable slice of historic Dubai and the emotional centre of the tour.

Downtown Dubai. The modern showpiece district built around the Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Mall and the Dubai Fountain. This is where the full-day and afternoon tours usually finish, ideally timed for the evening fountain shows.

Many visitors search for a “Dubai city tour bus” or a “hop-on hop-off” ticket. The open-top red sightseeing buses that loop around Dubai are a flexible, budget option: you buy a ticket, ride a fixed route, and get on and off at set stops with a recorded audio commentary. Best time. The cooler months from October to April are ideal for walking the souks and old town.
